More information on the Tshwaing Crater
The Tshwaing crater is situated about 40km north-west of Pretoria and is one of the best preserved and most accessible impact craters in the world. In 1989 it was confirmed as a 220 000 year old meteor impact crater. It is believed that the meteor was between 30 to 50 meters in diameter and was travelling at 20 to 40 km per second at the time of impact. The result was complete disintegration of the meteor on impact and it left a bowl shaped crater of 1100 meter in diameter and 200 meter deep.
