More info on Pretoria

The city of Tshwane is situated in the province of Gauteng.  As Tshwane is the capital of the republic of South Africa, the seat of Government is located here (Union Buildings).  Arcadia, one of the older suburbs, is home to more than a hundred diplomatic missions and foreign embassies. Tshwane boasts a population of about 2 million.  The word "Tshwane" is derived from the word "tsona" and means "we are one" or "we are the same".

Union Buildings

The Union Buildings house our parliament and the offices of our president.  The building consists of a centre portion with two wings on each side.  Each wing represents the English and the Boerish part of the population.

Voortrekker Monument
On entry, one is met with an incredible sight: a massive domed hall with marble floors and an impressive marble frieze depicting historical scenes.
This Voortrekker monument is especially celebrated on 16 December, the anniversary of the battle at Blood River.  On this day hundreds of South Africans stream to this monument to commemorate the day of the battle and to witness one of the most amazing archaeological designs in history: the monument was constructed in such a way that, at precisely 12 noon on 16 December, a single ray of sunlight falls into the Shrine of Honor and lights up the inscription:

“Ons vir jou, Zuid Afrika!”

(We for you, South Africa!)

Church Square

The Church Square is the home of the statue of old President Paul Kruger.

The typical Italian Renaissance style architecture dates back to the 19th century.  Visit the old or come and enjoy the parades.
