During the gold rush of 1885, thousands of people rushed to the newly formed Johannesburg to seek their fortunes in gold. Within only 4 years, the city grew to be the second largest city. Instant overpopulation developed. Shortly thereafter, most residents were relocated to an area called Klipspruit after the outbreak of the bubonic plague in JHB City Central. As the mining industry developed, so did the need for labour and even more people streamed to this area. The area was later renamed as Soweto, the name obtained from the first two letters of “South Western Township”- the original description of this area.
