The Pilanesberg Game Park is the closest park to the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg that boasts the Big Five. It is also the ideal breakaway for those with only a day to spare.
The Pilanesberg National Park is situated next to the entertainment complex of Sun City. The park is 55.000 hectares in extent and well-known as a malaria-free area. It has a circular form due to the fact that it encompasses a 1200 million year old volcano crater with a small lake situated in the centre. This very scenic area is nestled in the transition zone between the Kalahari and the Lowveld, with both these vegetation types found here. In the Pilanesberg you will find virtually all the animal species of Southern Africa, including (but not limited to) lion, elephant, white- and black rhino, buffalo, leopard, zebra, hyena, giraffe, hippo and crocodile. More than 300 bird species have been counted in the park so far.
The roads in the park comprise of some 200 kilometers. Various types of accommodation is available within the park, ranging from chalets and safari tents to luxury lodges and hotels. The park has a number of scenic picnic spots, numerous hides for game watching, colossal walk-in aviaries, safe hiking trails, night-time safari drives and flights over the park in hot-air balloons. The Pilanesberg Game Park has such a variety on offer and the park is located so close to the city, it is the ideal spot for a day tour, or even a half-day tour. |
